"Jodo Shinshu for the Average Joe"
The conference which was held by the San Fernando Valley Hongwanji, focused on how we as ordinary people, can apply the Jodo Shinshu Dharma to everyday life. Whether it would be figuring out a way to gassho in public, saying "itadakimasu" at a restaurant, waiting in line at the airport, or learning how to deal with frustrations in heavy traffic, the conference expressed how the Buddha Dharma could help us deal with these situations. In a creative and enjoyable manner through the wisdom of the reverends who spoke and video vignettes, we all learned much about ourselves through this conference and the teachings of Jodo Shinshu

Every other Wednesday, a fun craft day/potluck luncheon is held. During this time, we learn how to make a variety of crafts including origami/hydrangea flowers, colorful crochet kitchen scrubbies, aprons, decorative diffusers and jewelry. Members often bring in items they have learned to make to share with us. It is a fun and enjoyable morning including a delicious lunch. Some of the items have been sold at various events such as our Obon and the Asian Food Festival.
Cuyamaca College water conservation garden
ecosangha
as part of the btsd's promotion of ecosangha, the bwa of san diego visited the water conservation garden of Cuyamaca college in el cajon. In an hour long tour, the docent informed us of many ways in which we can save water by recognizing and planting drought tolerant plants , making fertilizer out of table scraps, using different types of mulch, and developing home water collection systems. We also learned how much water we save by having a yard with drought tolerant plants as oppose to one with a lawn. It enhanced our efforts to reuse, reduce and recycle.
